Circuit Board Explained

At its core, a circuit board is a thin, flat piece of material with an electrical circuit printed on it. Usually made of fiberglass or plastic, these boards contain copper pathways that connect components like chips, transistors, diodes, and other electrical components. When power is applied, current flows through these pathways, activating the components and allowing them to function as intended.

The most basic type of circuit board is what’s known as a single-sided or single-layer board. Multi-layer boards are more complex and can support more intricate circuitry. These boards have multiple layers of conductive and nonconductive material laminated together. The traces that make up the circuit are etched into the copper layer by using a photolithography process. This allows for higher density designs, as well as more complex routing. Additionally, these boards are much more reliable as the different layers protect against physical shock.

Circuit boards are also used to mount electronic components, which are then connected to the board via a soldering process. This allows the components to get power and communicate with each other. The assembly process requires a high level of skill and precision, as any missteps or errors can result in a faulty circuit.
