How To Reset A Circuit Breaker That Has Tripped

When it comes to complicated home repairs, resetting a circuit breaker that has tripped is one of the easier tasks. However, it’s still important to know how to do it properly. After all, circuit breakers are in place to protect your home from electrical fires, and if you don’t reset them properly, you may be putting yourself and your home at risk.

The first step in resetting a circuit breaker that has tripped is to identify which breaker has tripped. A tripped breaker will look different than an untripped breaker, typically being pushed away from the rest of the switches. Some breakers may also have a red tag on them, indicating that they have tripped.

Once you’ve identified the tripped breaker, you can reset it by simply pushing it back into its original position. Be sure to put your hand on the switch itself, not the cover plate, as this could cause you to get shocked.

You should then check to make sure the power has been restored to the area or appliance that was originally affected. If it has, great! You’ve successfully reset the tripped breaker.

In some cases, however, the breaker may trip again shortly after you reset it. If this happens, you may need to inspect the wiring or the appliance or area that was originally affected. It’s possible there’s a short circuit somewhere that needs to be fixed. If you’re not comfortable inspecting the wiring yourself, it’s best to call an electrician.

Resetting a circuit breaker that has tripped is a fairly easy task, but it’s important to do it correctly. Knowing how to properly reset your circuit breaker can save you time, money, and potentially prevent major damage to your home.
