A PNP transistor is a type of bipolar junction transistor (BJT) that has a positive (P)-type semiconductor material sandwiched between two n-type semiconductor materials. The PNP transistor is named for the order of the semiconductor materials in its structure: P-type, n-type, P-type. The PNP transistor is a three-terminal device, with the terminals labeled emitter, base, and collector. The emitter is the P-type semiconductor material, and the base and collector are both n-type semiconductor materials. The PNP transistor is a current-controlled device, which means that the current flowing through the collector is controlled by the current flowing through the base. When a small current is applied to the base, it causes a larger current to flow through the collector. This is because the base current creates a depletion region in the PN junction between the base and the emitter. This depletion region reduces the resistance of the PN junction, allowing more current to flow through the collector. The PNP transistor can be used as an amplifier or a switch. As an amplifier, the PNP transistor can amplify a small input signal to a larger output signal. As a switch, the PNP transistor can turn a small input signal on or off. The schematic symbol for a PNP transistor is shown below.

The arrow on the emitter represents the direction of current flow. When a positive voltage is applied to the emitter, current will flow from the emitter to the collector. The PNP transistor is a versatile device that can be used in a variety of electronic circuits. It is a key component in many electronic devices, such as radios, televisions, and computers.
