Printed circuit boards (PCBs) are a key component in many electronic devices. From computers to phones to medical devices, PCBs are responsible for connecting all the different devices together. But what most people don’t know is that PCBs are made from a variety of materials, each of which provides different properties and capabilities.
At its core, every printed circuit board consists of a base material called a substrate. The substrate is usually made of non-conductive material such as fiberglass or paper. This substrate provides a solid foundation on which the other components of the circuit board can be attached. The substrate also helps to protect the components of the board from damage and electrical interference.
Once the substrate is chosen, the components of the board need to be attached. To do this, a thin layer of conductive metal is often applied to the board. Copper is the most commonly used metal because it has excellent electrical conductivity. Other metals such as tin or gold are also used depending on the specific requirements of the device.
To ensure that the components stay in place, special solder is used to attach them to the board. This solder melts at a lower temperature than the metal on the board and forms a strong bond between the two surfaces. Once the components are soldered in place, they remain securely attached until the device is disassembled.
The final step in the manufacturing process is to finish the board. This involves adding a layer of insulation and a protective coating. The insulation helps to prevent electrical interference from nearby circuits while the protective coating helps to protect the board from environmental damage and corrosion.
By combining a substrate, metal, solder, and insulation, printed circuit boards are created that are both reliable and durable. This explains why PCBs are used in so many different types of electronic devices today. Without them, none of our modern technology would exist.
