What is a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Made Of?
Have you ever wondered what it takes to make the modern-day electronic devices you use every day? While components like processors, memory chips, and other integrated circuits generally get all the attention, the heart of any device is the printed circuit board (PCB). Though it may not look like much, the PCB is crucial in connecting all the components together and enabling them to function as one.
So what is a PCB made of? In its most basic form, a PCB is made up of two main elements: the substrate and the tracks. The substrate’s job is to provide a base for all of the other components to be soldered onto. It generally consists of an insulating material, such as fiberglass, phenolic paper, or epoxy resin, with copper foil plated onto one or both sides. The copper foil is what allows signals to flow through the board.
The tracks on a PCB are what connect the various components together. They are created by etching away the copper foil to create pathways for the current to flow. Depending on the complexity of the design, the PCB may have multiple layers of tracks. These are then connected using vias, which are holes drilled into the board and joined together with copper wires or plated with more copper foil. The tracks on the board are often coated with a thin layer of solder resist to protect them from corrosion and shorting out.
In addition to the substrate and tracks, PCBs also include a number of other components that help to make it function properly. Some of these include capacitors, resistors, transistors, and microcontrollers. All of these components are soldered onto the board, either directly or through connections made with wires.
Finally, the PCB is usually encased in a protective coating to prevent it from being damaged. This can be done with a conformal coating or an encapsulation material. This coating helps to insulate the board against moisture and other environmental factors.
To sum it up, a printed circuit board is made up of a substrate, tracks, and a variety of components. All of these are held together with a protective coating. Despite its relatively simple appearance, the PCB is an essential part of any electronic device, allowing the various components to work together and perform their intended functions.
