What Is The Printed Circuit Board Made Out Of

When it comes to the inner workings of modern electronics, there is no component more important than the printed circuit board (PCB). From its roots in the 1950s to its use in today’s most advanced technology, the PCB is essential to all electronics and electrical systems. But what is a PCB made out of?

To understand what a PCB is, let’s look at how it is made. A printed circuit board begins as non-conductive material, usually fiberglass or a plastic epoxy resin. This material is then layered with a thin copper foil, which serves as the conductive element for providing electrical pathways throughout the device.

On top of this copper layer, a protective coating of solder mask is applied to both protect the board and provide the necessary insulation for each component. After the solder mask has been applied, silkscreen labels are added to indicate, for example, which components are present and the purpose of each.

The final layer on the PCB is that of the components themselves. Through a process called through-hole mounting, the components are soldered to the copper layer and then held in place with screws or other fasteners. The components are then connected to each other through the copper traces to form the necessary electrical pathways needed for the device to function.

Now that we understand the layers of a PCB, what are these components actually made out of? The most common materials used in PCBs are aluminum, copper, and nickel-plated copper. Aluminum is often used for the PCB substrate due to its light weight and low cost. Copper is the preferred material for traces due to its superior electrical conductivity, while nickel-plated copper is often used for components that require additional heat dissipation, such as power switches.

In short, the printed circuit board is an essential component of modern electronics, and its design and fabrication relies on many different materials, each chosen for their specific properties and characteristics. By understanding the components and materials used in making a PCB, we can better appreciate the level of precision and complexity required to assemble these devices.
